The Kvaskov Family Has Founded the Yevhen Kvaskov Scholarship to Honour Alumnus Fallen in the Battle

23.08.2024

Yevhen graduated from the Bachelor's program in Economics (2000) and the Master's program in Information Management Systems and Technologies (2003) at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He was an active member of the KMA community. He made a great personal contribution to the development of the USIC internet center during his student years. Since its establishment in 1996, it has become a new level of access to information resources for students. Later, this system became an important component of the whole KMA's information system.

After completing his studies, Yevhen kept in touch with the Academy, organizing and conducting national-patriotic events at the university. He also became one of the founders of the Brotherhood of Cossack Combat Tradition "Spas" (since the beginning of the russian full-scale invasion, many members of the Brotherhood voluntarily joined the Defense Forces of Ukraine).

For over 15 years, Yevhen dedicated himself to public and educational activities, focusing on the national-patriotic education of children and youth, the consolidation of Ukrainian society, and the preservation of historical memory.

Among the most significant initiatives that Yevhen personally organized are:

  • The annual Patriotic Game "Kozak Quest" (since 2008). It is a two-month competition among high school students in Kyiv, designed for maximum immersion in Ukrainian history and national culture, including junior soldier’s training and basic tactical medicine. Tens of thousands of Kyiv schoolchildren have participated in this event.

  • The annual Unity Chain on the Paton Bridge, which had been held on the Unity Day of Ukraine. It was a symbolic event that united all generations of Ukrainian people and served as a reminder that the people are the main creators of their state. The event has attracted up to 4,000 participants.

  • The "Cossack Spirit" initiative for young people in juvenile colonies of Ukraine (from 2014 to 2019). Yevhen visited the colonies as a volunteer of the penitentiary chaplaincy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and organized sports competitions and historical-patriotic contests, paying special attention to personal work with inmates.

Yevhen joined the Defense Forces of Ukraine immediately after the russian full-scale invasion began. Due to a childhood eye injury, he was not supposed to be in the army. However, he proved to be the strongest, most resilient, responsible, persistent, and prepared fighter. He died as a Hero during a combat mission near Bakhmut (the Donetsk region), saving the life of a fellow at the cost of his own. On September 1, 2023, by the decree of the President of Ukraine No. 549/2023, Yevhen Kvaskov was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage, III degree, for personal bravery shown in the defense of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The Kvaskov family wishes to continue Yevhen's legacy by supporting the growth of youth, particularly the development of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and its community. Therefore, the grant is aimed at supporting student projects that contribute to the development of the Academy, the preservation of historical memory, and the consolidation of Ukrainian society.

More details about the grant and application conditions will be announced on August 29, on the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine Who Died in the Struggle for Independence, Sovereignty, and Territorial Integrity of Ukraine.
