Fundraising for the Award in Honor of Tetiana Balabushevich and Mykhailo Kirsenko
About
UPD: the organizing team has decided to extend this fundraising to ensure the sustainability of the award for future years, taking into account the activity it has acquired.
Students from the Kyiv-Mohyla Department of History united to raise funds for an establishment of the award for bachelor’s degrees in honor of professors Tetiana Balabushevych and Mykhailo Kirsenko, whose work became the foundation of the department and played a significant role in the professional lives of many of the KMA graduates.
As the founder and first head of the KMA Department of History, Mykhailo Kirsenko developed its concept and 11 study programs for it. Together with Tetyana Balabushevych, they pioneered the comparative history of civilizations in Ukraine, as well as in-depth studies of Central and Eastern Europe.
The award in memory of Tetyana Balabushevych and Mykhailo Kirsenko will be a one-time payment for one of the 4th-year students, whose final paper (professional thesis) on Central and Eastern Europe will be considered the best among fellow students. A thesis will be reviewed by an independent jury consisting of 3 representatives: the head of the department and two professors.
Project aims
The goal of our fundraiser this year is to collect ₴20,000 (UAH) to establish an award in memory of Tetiana Balabushevych and Mykhailo Kirsenko. The award will be given to a 4th year student for writing the best thesis on the history of Central and Eastern Europe.
*In case the funds are not raised in full, the scholarship recipient will receive a smaller amount than was applied for, with the possibility of further payment from future fundraisers for the T.A. Balabushevych and M.V. Kirsenko Scholarship Award.
*In the case there are no students willing to write a thesis on Central and Eastern Europe, the award will be given to students engaged in related research areas, including comparative history, particularly the Balkans and Ukraine in the context of comparative studies, cultural interconnections.
Project purpose
Our goal is to motivate young students to research the topic of Central and Eastern Europe and encourage them to take the first steps in their academic careers. Thus we will honor the memory of the professors and continue their life's work.
Project influence
We believe that the award will not only honor the remarkable legacy of the professors Tetiana Balabushevych and Mykhailo Kirsenko, who founded the KMA Department of History, but also support the academic talent of young historians. This award will recognize students for their research efforts and motivate them to continue their academic career at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
